Dangerous sports: which ones are the riskiest?
Of course, there are “dangerous” sports. And the folks at Advanced Physical Medicine have done the homework for us on which sports are the riskiest.
Just a sportsparenting FYI.

Yeah, I’m not a big fan of the first statistics, since it doesn’t factor in # of participants, like the 2nd one does.
But to say “most dangerous” is a subjective term; you have to define that. It would be interesting if you could give some sort of ranking to severity of injuries (obviously, concussion is more severe than a jammed finger). But not sure how to do that.

Yeah, Joey, I know “dangerous” is rather subjective. I just thought I’d pass along the info for sports parents to look at.

Thanks for sharing Janis – I am curious about the percentages – 4.85% for football and 1.85% for basketball – The Percentage of people who get injured for any sport should be 100% – if you play long enough you are going to get injured at sometime.

Yeah, you’d probably have to ask the people who did the study.

Looks like it only tracks injuries as far as hospital ER visits. It doesn’t count simple bruises, bumps, or cuts. So if there were 100,000 kids playing football, and 4850 of them made a trip to the ER in a season, the injury rate would be 4.85%.

That’s probably the only way they could measure; they wouldn’t know about the smaller stuff.
This is really alarming! Who would have thought that Basketball, which I guess is the most loved sport in America would be in the top spot.
I know, right? I would figure football since it’s such a high impact sport.
That was a terrific and a very useful infographic, Janis. Thanks for sharing these valuable information with us. Sports are fun but may turn dangerous at times too!

I never would have guessed that basketball was such a dangerous sport.
