In youth sports, let your kids enjoy the bugs in the grass
There’s nothing cuter than little kids dressed in youth sports uniforms ready to play the game.
They squiggle on the bench. They can’t wait to see what today’s after-game snack is going to be. Some of them are not really sure what they’re doing on the field or court. They just like running around–they’re having fun!
Especially when they get distracted by bugs and worms and a myriad of other interesting things one can find on the ground.
Those kinds of behaviors are cute when kids are little. And they should be.
And my words to you? Enjoy those childlike treasures.
There’s plenty of time later for serious sports play. For now, let your kids enjoy the bugs in the grass.

This really brought back some treasured moments of watching my daughter practice her ballet positions while playing 2nd base in little league!! Great times!

Oh Janis, you wise wise woman! I raised two boys in where in soccer from the time they were 5. I never pushed and yelled like some of the parents. I was just happy they were in the fresh air and not watching TV. If they stopped to pick a flower or pick their nose, I didn’t care. I wish the parents thought like you do!

We do often take things so serious that we don’t embrace the fun … so true.
Thanks for sharing a great post. I remember those days when my youngest son played baseball. I miss those days, thanks for helping me to bring back those memories.

My neighbors kids have pet spiders in their yard. The girls squeal in horror and the boys play for hours with them. Very important part of life and nature to enjoy them.

I so completely agree with this Janis. It’s all about having fun, getting exercise, and building character at the early ages. I always enjoy your approach to kids and sports.

Those were actually some of my favorite times…playing little league baseball as a kid growing up and being able to run around and just be a kid. Can never replace those experiences, whether as a kid or as a parent.

How true! When my kids were growing up, they could have lived outside! So much to discover!
Cute story! It made me smile and feel like a child again. =)
