Yeah, so virtuous isn’t usually a word used to describe athletes.
We’ve all heard athletes described as persistent, tenacious, and hard-working.
If you’re one of those who believes that youth sports is just youth sports and it really has no significance in the scheme of life, then you may as well stop reading now.
But if you believe that there’s more to youth sports than sports, that youth sports is a journey. It’s not all about one season, or even one year, it’s about life, then you may want to hear what I have to say about raising a virtuous athlete.
What is a Virtue?
A virtue is a positive trait or quality deemed to be morally good. A virtuous person has moral and ethical principles.
Sports parents want their kids to grow up with good principles. But I fear that many are missing out on the very rich opportunity of youth sports as a teaching tool for those principles.
I want to Help You Raise Virtuous Athletes
I have a very specific plan to help you raise athletes with good principles. I want to give you a guideline for instilling virtues in your child.
Here’s what I plan to do.
I discovered a website called 52 Virtues that lists the character qualities of a virtuous person and as long as it takes me to work through it, I plan to give you practical steps and guidance on how you can raise kids with each one of these 52 virtues. It may take me two years since I plan on covering two a month!
But I will get through it because this is important. Your kids are important. Youth sports as a life-shaper is important. Raising a generation of young people with virtuous character traits could very well change our society.
Call me a dreamer, if you want. But I believe that shaping the next generation is our only hope. And youth sports is one of the tools we can use to do that.
Will you join me on this 52-virtue journey?
