I fought that reading battle with my son. Once he’d learned to read, I thought, “Yay, now let’s go to the library and get some good books!”
Easier said than done. I tried everything to find books he would read, until I discovered the secret that helped unlock his love for reading.
I found him good books about sports.
That may not seem like such a revelation to you, but for me it was a wonderful realization. Because once I unlocked his love for reading by introducing him to books about sports, the love continued and still continues to this day. He’s 22 now, and loves reading a good book, even if it’s not about sports!
If you have a young athlete in the house who shares my son’s sports fever and who would really rather be playing sports than reading, perhaps a good book about sports will be the key that unlocks your child’s love for reading.
There’s a lot of good sports-themed books out there, but I’ve found a new series about hockey that I think my son would have loved.
Meet The Puck Hog
The Puck Hog books are a delightful series about a children’s hockey team and the challenges and struggles they face. And even though the books are for children, ages 6-10, parents are encouraged to read along because, who knows, you just might learn something too!
The books are written by Christie Casciano Burns, a television news anchor in Syracuse, New York, and the mother of two youth hockey players. She wrote these books because she loves youth hockey and wants to encourage the values of fair play, playing together as a team, playing hard, and having fun.
Your kids don’t have to be hockey players or fans to enjoy The Puck Hog series. The challenges your kids face, and the challenges faced by kids in The Puck Hog are one in the same: teamwork, unselfish play, good sportsmanship, meeting tough challenges, and even pushy parents.
Yes, this is a paid review. But I stand by my promise to only review products that will help sports parents and their young athletes have a better youth sports experience.
