Is your child’s biggest competition in youth sports turning out to be someone on his own team? Perhaps he is trying to beat another player out for a starting spot or even just to get more playing time.
All three of my kids faced this situation at various times in middle and high school.
My oldest daughter had a girl competing with her for her catching spot during all four years of high school, my son had another QB trying to take his position from him when he finally made it to varsity football, and my youngest daughter had another girl who desperately wanted her starting libero spot, in 3 of her 4 high school seasons.
All three of these scenarios gave my kids many stressful moments, not to mention their mom’s frustration! In fact, I think there were probably times when I took the struggle worse than my kids did.
But as parents, we must remember that there’s always a silver lining to the cloud; the question is, are you helping your child to find it?
